The Future of Plant-Based Meat
The future of plant-based meat will be more prevalent in the coming years. These products are healthier, better for the environment, and more humane to animals. The current demand for these products is snowballing, and several companies are working on creating new products that actually look and taste like meat but are made from plants instead.
Plant-based meat will likely become even more popular in the future due to its positive health benefits, environmental impact, and animal welfare considerations (it’s also sustainable).
According to the World Resources Institute, “Livestock production is responsible for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 equivalent), which is more than the emissions from all cars, trucks, boats, and planes combined.” The meat industry also uses a lot of water and land resources.
Why Is Plant-Based Meat Necessarily Better than Cow Meat?
Plant-based meat is better for the environment.
- Replacing cow meat with plant-based alternatives will reduce carbon emissions and lower our dependence on fossil fuels. In fact, some estimates suggest that switching to just 20% plant-based meat could save 300 million tons of CO2!
- And it’s not just about greenhouse gas emissions. The energy required to raise a cow for slaughter is significantly greater than what it takes to grow legumes and vegetables.
- Also, by eliminating the need for pastureland, we can free up more land for other uses like reforestation or solar power generation.
Is Plant-Based Meat Safe to Eat?
There is no doubt that plant-based meat is generally safer than animal meat. The biggest problem with eating meat is the slaughtering of animals, which can result in dangerous bacteria on the surface of the animal and inside its organs.
Meat eaters are at risk for illnesses like E. coli, salmonella, and Listeria; vegetarians and vegans face less risk because they don’t have to worry about those things coming from their food (although they still run into problems with harmful bacteria).
But there is no evidence that plant-based meat causes cancer or other diseases. For that matter and some potential benefits to choosing it as a regular part of your diet: It will reduce your carbon footprint and save water resources, especially if you replace some or all of your beef consumption with plant-based options like tempeh bacon strips or veggie burgers.
